When it comes to where and how a woman gives birth, it’s now as much about what the soon-to-be mother wants and what a doctor can provide.

Crucially, it’s also about writing it all down to ensure that everybody understands what needs to happen, and a birth goes as smoothly as possible. This is the birth plan.
