Café Columbia at 10 Columbia Asia Hospitals Awarded Food Safety and Quality Certification by Ministry of Health

Petaling Jaya, August 27, 2021 – Ten Café Columbia outlets, the in-house café at Columbia Asia hospitals, have been awarded the BeSS certification by Malaysia’s Ministry of Health (MOH). The BeSS certification (Bersih, Selamat & Sihat/Clean, Safe & Healthy) is a recognition for food outlet operators who are meticulous about the hygiene of their premises, food safety and quality, including nutrition, as well as serving portions that cater to patrons’ individual needs. “The credit goes to everyone involved in Café Columbia as this is the result of great teamwork and commitment from them,” said Columbia Asia Manager of Support Services, Ms Nur Eliani Hussein who oversees operations at all Café Columbia branches in the group.

The 10 said Café Columbia outlets are located at Columbia Asia facilities namely in Bukit Rimau, Cheras, Iskandar Puteri, Klang, Petaling Jaya, Puchong, Seremban, Setapak, Taiping and the most recent; Tebrau. The latter also received MOH’s Trust My Catering certification for food safety and quality in catering. With this acknowledgement, it is clear that Café Columbia outlets meet the legal requirements under Malaysia’s Food Cleanliness Regulations 2009 which are:

  • To ensure food premises are hygienic and satisfactory in terms of design and building.
  • To ensure food handlers maintain personal hygiene and avoid practices that can contaminate food.
  • To ensure equipment and appliances used are suitable, clean and easy to clean.
  • To facilitate, strengthen and harmonise the enforcement activities in food premises including those conducted by the Local Authorities.
  • To provide for the requirement of mandatory food safety assurance.

About Café Columbia, it is its own brand under Columbia Asia. Each team is headed by a Food Service Manager along with kitchen personnel led by a qualified chef with hotel kitchen experience. The café menu comprises local and international cuisine. The hygienic kitchen environment churns out dishes not just for outpatients but for inpatients. “The inpatients’ diet is the café’s utmost priority as far as details are concerned,” added Eliani. “Based on doctors’ prescription, our chef works with a dietician and discuss special meals such as diabetic-friendly and heart-healthy dishes.”

Moving forward, the Café Columbia brand ensures the continuity of these commendable practises for the benefit of Columbia Asia inpatients and café patrons. As mentioned by Eliani, “The BeSS certification has become our benchmark of excellent restaurant practises so we must aim even higher.”
