Percutaneous Procedures for Lower Back Pain

Percutaneous procedures are minimally invasive procedures that can be done without open surgery. Most of the procedures are done under x-ray guidance. The benefits of these procedures are:

  1. Can be done as outpatient or daycare basis.
  2. Requires only local anesthesia therefore eliminate general anesthesia and its risks.
  3. Less traumatic and almost no scar compare to open procedures.
  4. Elimination of complications and risks that may result from open surgery.
  5. Rapid recovery time, patient can go home the same day of treatment.
  6. About 80% success rate when indication is correct.

Indication to choose patients or candidates for these percutaneous procedures must be done judiciously by a trained spine surgeon in order to produce a succesful outcome.

Some of the percutaneous procedures which are available in Columbia Asia Hospital – Petaling Jaya are as followings:

Neuroforamina Injection

Indicated for patient who has radiculopathy which means radiating pain to lower limb or sciatica secondary to inflamation of spinal nerve root. Steroids and local anesthetics are injected into neuroforamina under xray guidance.

The injection will reduce the inflammation of the affected spinal nerve root thus reduce the radiating pain.

Facet Joint Injection

Indicated in patient with axial back pain secondary to facet joint arthritis.

The involved facet joint is injected with steroids to reduce inflammation and
thus reduce the pain. Procedure done
under x ray guidance.

Rhyzolysis

This procedure utilizes the radiofrequency energy to disrupt the facet’s medial branch nerve so that it can no longer transmit pain from the injured facet joints. The outcome, no more axial back pain cause by facet joints arthropathy.

Procedure also done under x-ray guidance.

Rhyzolysis gives better and longer pain relief compare to facet joint injection. under x ray guidance.

Nucleoplasty

This is a percutaneous procedure to decompress the intervetebral disc thus relief pain and sciatica in patient with slipped disc without doing open surgery.

It uses either radiofrequency energy or plasma light to dissolve the slipped disc nucleus and indirectly decompress the disc and relief the symptoms.

However, careful patient selection is important for an excellent result.

This procedure is indicated for patient who suffers from a contained slipped disc as noted in MRI scan.
